The mountain Schafberg is a very prominent mountain in the Austrian region Salzkammergut. He is between the lakes Wolfgangsee, Mondsee and Attersee. This tour describes the 9 km long, moderate hike of St. Wolfgang to the pastures Dorneralm, Schafbergalm and then to the summit Schafberg 1.782m. Because on the Schafberg you’ll have the rare opportunity you must not go down on foot. You can also drive with the cog railway to St. Wolfgang. Many other hikers were comfortable and did it the other way. The top station of the funicular railway is only a few meters below the mountain hotel Schafbergspitze on 1.735m. Parents with children of compulsory school age is best to take the funicular up to the Schafbergalm 1.360m and then hike in about an hour, the last 2.5 km to the summit. For a safe tour hiking boots and a good hiking equipment are requirement. Since the Schafberg falls on the north side of the summit area very far perpendicular, let your kids not alone.

We start the tour in St. Wolfgang by the Schafberg station at an altitude of 540m. For the tour are 3.5 hours specified. At the beginning we follow the trail No. 24 out from center to the farm - Aschingergut at 1.8 km and an altitude of 655m. There we go onto the footpath No.23 to the pasture Dorneralm 1.022m to the managed hut - Schafbergalm. There are some places where you’ll hike steep uphill. The trail leads us consistently through the cool forest. From time to time there are already below some wonderful views of Lake Wolfgang. After about 2 hours we arrive at the timberline near the hut of the austrian association - Naturfreunde. In spring and fall the wind can be cool from here. A few minutes later we reach the Schafbergalm with the intermediate station of the Schafbergbahn. In the summer many tourists will start here there hike.

At that time when Austria was still a monarchy from here the chair carrier wore rich tourists to the summit. From this period are the many concrete steps. Those who hike on the Schafberg and will avoid the mass tourism, should definitely do it in the off-season times, or get up early enough to reach the summit before the first train. Many hikers sleep therefore a night on the Schafbergalm. With the very impressive view of the surrounding mountains and lakes we walk about 1 hour to the summit. But before stopping at the hut – Himmelspfortehütte or at the hotel Schafbergspitze- we go from the top station of the funicular railway a few meters down to the Himmelspforte (gates of heaven). There you can see the only summit cross on the Schafberg. There we enjoy the wonderful 360 degree views of the entire Salzkammergut and far into the alps.

The mountain Schafberg north of St. Wolfgang is belonging to the Northern Limestone Alps and has a height of 1.782m. The cog railway was built in 1893 and has a length of 5.85 kilometers. From St. Wolfgang overcomes the railway 1188m vertical meters. The top station of the funicular railway is on 1.730m, just below the summit. The railway is in operation between May and October and the and the ride takes about 45 minutes. Right on top of the mountain was built in the 19th Century with the mountain hotel Schafbergspitze also the first Austrian mountain hotel. From the summit of the Schafberg you have a splendid view over 7 Salzkammergut lakes, across large parts of the region Salzkammergut and up to the glacier Dachstein.
