The mountain Schafberg north of St. Wolfgang is one of the Northern Limestone Alps, has a height of 1.782m and is the most prominent mountain in the region Salzkammergut. This hike describes the 10-km ascent of St. Wolfgang to the pasture Vormaueralm and to the peak on 1.782m. Because on the Schafberg exists the rare opportunity you can drive down by the cog railway to St. Wolfgang. For parents with children of compulsory school age, this hike is due to the demanding trail - Purtschellersteig not particularly well suited.

Of the large parking lot near the town center in St. Wolfgang, we take first the footpath No.28 700m in a northeasterly direction to the forest edge. On a steep gravel road you’ll hike up 5.5 km and about 800 vertical meters through the shady forest to the pasture - Vormaueralm to 1.357m. The next 1.7 km, the hiking trail No.25 leads us a little downhill to the romantically situated lake - Mönichsee on a high of 1.255m. There begins the demanding trail No.17 Purtschellersteig in the direction to the Schafberg. On these 2 kilometers we walk first through a forest with many roots. At kilometer 8.2 and below the mountain - Törlspitz begins the actual path, which is well equipped with a steel cable. This difficult section is about 200m long and because of the rocky steps well accessible. You should therefore only be afraid of heights.

Then on the narrow trail and past a small cave (weather hole) we hike up to the railroad track of the Schafbergbahn. You follow this up a few meters and then cross it. 400m further we reach the mountain station of the Schafbergbahn. The cog railway was built in 1893 and is 5.85 km long. From St. Wolfgang she overcomes a difference in altitude of 1188m. The top station of the funicular railway on the Sheep Mountain is located just below the summit at 1.735m. Between May and October, the cog railway operated and the ride takes about 45 minutes. Up to the mountain hotel directly on top of the mountain it will be only a few meters. The hotel was built in the 19th Century and is also the first Austrian mountain hotel. From the top you have a unique view of the glacier –Dachstein, the mountains in the Tauern alps and you can also see 7 lakes in the region Salzkammergut. After the rest and before we drive down, we walk a few vertical meters down to the Himmelspforte. There is also the only mountain cross on the Schafberg. Those who prefer walk back down to Lake Wolfgang, look at the description of the hiking tour past the Schafbergalm and Dorneralm.
