The hike up to the 1.975m high mountain Sarstein and then down to Obertraun on the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt, is definitely one of the most beautiful hikes in the Austrian region Salzkammergut. On no other peak one can capture so well and for so long the UNESCO World Heritage region of Hallstatt Dachstein belonging Dachstein Glacier and Lake Hallstatt. Also the rest panorama with the lakes - Altausseersee, Grundlsee and many mountain peaks are very beautiful. For the rise, there are several variants. We chose the starting point at the train station Steeg-Gosau in Bad Goisern, because there is a very good train connection back again from Obertraun to Bad Goisern. Moreover you’ll have in this variant from the summit of Sarstein down to the hut - Naturfreundehütte on a length of 2.5 km  a wonderful view to the Dachstein glacier in front of you. All those who are traveling with more than one car, or want to take a taxi to spare a few vertical meters, they start from the large car park next to the main road, or from Pötschenpass.

From the train station Steeg-Gosau we go to the northeast slightly uphill to the district St. Agatha until we cross the main road and turn right. After 3.8 km you’ll cross the Salzkammergut road again. Who will start the mountain tour on this parking lot saves 3.8 km and about 230 vertical meters. From then on, we hike a steep forest path to the view – Simony-Aussicht on a high of 886m. In countless switchbacks, the trail lead us through the Rotengraben up to the hut - Sarsteinalm 1.715m, which we reached in about 3 hours. Just below the saddle - Sarsteinsattel we have a beautiful view of the Salzburg mountains. To the summit of Sarstein we walk up another 1.3 kilometers and 265 vertical meters. After 9 km you are at the summit cross on the border between Styria and Salzburg. The magnificent view is not limited to the Dachstein. Even the Gosaukamm and the other mountains in the Salzkammergut and Totes Gebirge are absolutely worth seeing.

After the rest on the summit we continue the hike down to Obertraun and cross the entire Sarstein ridge to the south. 2.5 km long you have a wonderful view of the Dachstein. Approx. an hour later we reach the unmanaged hut - Sarsteinhütte on 1.650m. After the rest we go down the 27% steep trail through the forest to Obertraun. There are always wonderful viewpoints on Lake Hallstatt, Hallstatt and Bad Goisern. After about 9 hours we reach the train station in Obertraun and then we drive on the eastern shore of Lake Hallstatt back to the train station Steeg-Gosau in the village of Bad Goisern.
