 Schladming is located in Enns valley, has around 4,400 inhabitants and an area of 10.3 km². Scenically very interesting are the contrasts of the limestone mountains like the Dachstein in the north of Schladming and the mountains in the Schladming Tauern in the south. Schladming is the central place of the region Schladming-Dachstein. Until to the 19th century Schladming was a major mining town in which up to 1,500 miners lived. There were silver, lead, copper, cobalt and nickel mined. The region around schladming is in summer a very famous holiday region with many mtb tours, hiking trails, bicycle tours and a lot of other summer activities.

The railway line through the Ennsvalley was built in the end of the 19th Century and Schladming was becoming more and more a popular winter resort. The first ski lift was in operation in 1953. The Planai is the largest ski resort in Schladming and is part of great ski area "Ski Amade" in styria and salzburg. The base station is located in the metropolitan area and to the major events such as the Night Race (Skislalom) come up to 50,000 spectators. After 1982 in Schladming will be again the World Alpine Ski Championships in 2013. Already many Alpine Ski World Cup downhill races held on the Planai in the past. In summer ends at the destination station of the Planai the 4.5 km long downhill trail for mountain bikers.

For several years, are also regularly conducted events oft he UCI Mountain Bike World Cup in Schladming. Right in the district of Schladming is the base station of the Planai cable railway and the après ski inn Hohenhaus Tenne. The 32km ski slopes are located at an altitude of 745m to 1902m. Of this, 30km are easy to moderate slopes and are 2km difficult ski slopes.  The floodlights on the slopes on Hochwurzen in Rohrmoos are except on Sunday at 6 days in operation, so you can ski up to 22 clock. At a length of 600m was constructed on the Planai a sound track for the skiers. The permanent race track, a quick-shot-line and beach chairs for a special holiday feeling are also available in the ski resort Schladming Planai - Hochwurzen. Right next to the base station of the Planai cable railway are many après ski bars, such as the great Hohenhaus Tenne.

The ski area Schladming Planai is part of the Four Mountains Ski Area. Hauser Kaibling, Planai, Reiteralm an Hochwurzen. The ski slopes and lifts are linked. So the total Schladming ski area has 124 km slopes, 46 lifts and 40 ski huts and is the largest ski area in the Dachstein Tauern Region. The Hohenhaus Tenne in Schladming is the largest Après Ski Hut in Europe. The Disco and event ski lodge offers a restaurant and party rooms with 680 m² for celebrations, presentations and seminars for up to 450 people.
