The challenging 11.1 km long mountain tour to the mountain - Großer Pyhrgas 2.244m is very diverse and scenically beautiful. At the summit of the highest mountain in the mountains Haller Mauern you’ll have a wonderful view in every direction. Particularly interesting in the north are the mountains – Sengsengebirge, east and south the Gesäuse with the neighboring mountains - Kleiner Pyhrgas, Scheiblingstein and Bosruck. In the west you can see the glacier Dachstein and the mountains – Grimming, Warscheneck, Spitzmauer and Großer Priel. For the 1161 vertical meters, you should not only bring good condition but also a high slip resistance. The mountain tour is only recommended on days with dry trails.

As starting point for this hike we chose the large parking lot about 300 meters before the well managed hut – Bosruckhütte on a high of 1.030m. The Bosruckhütte 1.042m will be at the end of this tour a very welcome rest stop. Up to a 400m long shortcut we walk on the first section 2.5 kilometers long cozy on a dirt road up to the also managed hut - Rohrauerhaus 1.308m. After the second rest stop we hike through the forest 300m south to the passage - Pyhrgasgatterl. There left begins the climb - Hofersteig and we follow it along the south ridge to the summit of the GroßerPyhrgas. At the beginning we walk easier uphill along on a narrow and densely wooded ridge. Along the border between Upper Austria and Styria, the Hofersteig is after the forest from 4 km increasingly bumpy and rocky. The average 36% steep trail in this section is rope secured at the two steeper heels. After 5.3 km we switch abruptly to the west side. 50m later, we reach the junction with the descent path towards to the hut - Hofalmhütte. The remaining 500m to the summit we walk flat on the west side. On clear days you have from the highest peak of the mountains - Haller Mauern a fantastic view.

The descent takes us back to the intersection and there we turn right on the hiking trail Nr.614 down to the passage - Hofalmsattel. Above is the average 35% steep trail as stony as the Hofersteig. From an altitude of 1.800m begins a 1,2 kilometer section of the belt and the mountain pine forest. On the passage - Hofalmsattel we take a break and enjoy again the wonderful view to Spital am Pyhrn and Windischgarsten. Those who wish can turn right here and reach the managed hut - Hofalm after 5-10 min. But we hike further to the left on the trail to Nr.618 to the huts - Rohrauerhaus & Bosruckhütte. After another 300 meters we do not go straight to the hut - Rohrauerhaus, but right on the trail to Nr.601 to the hut - Bosruckhütte. Past the pastures of the unmanaged Hiaslalm we walk downhill and reach at km 9.8 the way on which we are hike up in the morning to the hut Rohrauerhaus. A few hundred meters before we reach the starting point again we make a final rest at the well managed hut Bosruckhütte.
