We start the Enns Cycle Path by the river Danube and ride comfortably along the river Enns to Steyr and Ternberg. After arriving the town Enns by train we drive for about 5km in the opposite direction to the river Danube. A few hundred meters from the confluence of Danube and Enns is a Danube - bike ferry across the Danube from Enns to Mauthausen. Then we drive 3 km back on the same path again and in Enghagen begin the signs of the Enns Cycle Path R7. Exept for 4 short sections with 600 - 900m in Enns, Schieferegg, Haidershofen and Steyr we drive until Ternberg on paved roads and bike paths. Immediately after the village Kronstorf at kilometer 16 we leave the Enns Cycle Path R7, turn left and cross the river Enns. In the state Lower Austria we get to know the river Enns from the other side and ride 13km through Lower Austria on the Enns Cycle Path Nr.11. Just before Steyr we are back on the Enns Cycle Path in the state Upper Austria. At km 33 begins in Steyr the center with a nice path along the Enns. On the next kilometer we stroll leisurely through the beautiful and interesting center of Steyr. Here you can insert on the town square a long and very nice break. Steyr is with about 38,000 inhabitants, the third largest town in Upper Austria. It is located at the confluence of the two rivers Enns and Steyr. It is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and the center of a region with more than 100,000 people.

After the town square in Steyr we drive 2.5 km comfortably next to the river Enns. At km 37 we reach the little traveled country road L1344. On this road we drive the last 15km cozy up until Ternberg. After Ternberg the first 38 kilometers to Kleinreifling we cycle on a nice paved side street where we met only now and then a car. From Ternberg the landscape in the Upper Austrian region Traunviertel changes on an undulating in a mountainous is therefore called as gateway in the National Park Kalkalpen. Thus, the Enns Cycle Path has here more and longer climbs. In Ternberg you can see the biggest pocket knife. On the rock in the center of Losenstein was built in the 12th Century a castle. Today, the ruin is one of the largest and oldest in Upper Austria. Between Reichraming and Großraming you’ll cycle up a long slope with about 100 vertical meters. The National Park community Großraming was also already voted "most beautiful village in Upper Austria" and is located in the beautiful and varied landscape of the alps. The National Park Kalkalpen with its green pastures, romantic valleys, clear water, clean streams, many beautiful well-marked mountain bike tours, hiking and biking trails. Those who would like to have a view to the beautiful market town Weyer must only drive a detour of 4 km. Weyer has 223.8 square kilometers in area, and is the second largest community in Upper Austria. The health resort is noted for its ideal climatic conditions since imperial times and the fog-free "Golden Autumn" is very famous in Austria. Of particular interest in Weyer is the very well preserved mill - Katzensteiner. In Kleinreifling we must switch to the other side of the valley. On the busy main road B115 we bike to Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen. 2 km bevor Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen we leave Upper Austia and drive now in the province of Styria.

Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen is beautifully situated on a plateau above the river Enns amid the mountains of the region Gesaeuse and in the triangle between the states Styria, Upper Austria and Lower Austria. Especially the wonderful landscape in the narrow valley between Hieflau and Admont impressed us. Unfortunately there are between Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen and Hieflau a few kilometers bike path. From Altenmarkt bei St. Gallen through Großreifling and Landl to Hieflau the bike tour is very hilly and there are some slopes with about 20-80 vertical meters. Anyone who want not drive with the bike on the road, could make a trip with the train from Kleinreifling to Hieflau. In Hieflau can strong cyclists, who are traveling with a mountain bike, start with the MTB Tour up to Hochscheibenalm and then down to Gstatterboden. This mountain bike tour takes you with a very recommendable landscape through the center of the National Park Gesäuse. The river Enns overcomes at the 16 kilometers between Hieflau and the entrance of Gesaeuse a slope of about 150m. The region Gesäuse has its name from the wild and sparkling water. In the very popular hiking area you can be observe in the wild nature, about 90 species of breeding birds, marmots, mountain goats, deer and 50 species of orchids. 2002 a large part of the Gesäuse was declared to the National Park Gesäuse. The mountains of limestone rock in the Buchsteingruppe, Hochtorgruppe, Admonter-Reichsteingruppe and the group Lugauer-Zinödl offer many great motives for photographer.

In Gstatterboden we bike through the only little village in the central part of the National Park Gesäuse. Between the two small mountains Himbeerstein 1.222m and Haindlmauer 1.435m the Gesaeuse ends at the entrance Gesaeuse. Here you should definitely make a stop because the river Enns overcomes there a big height difference and the power of water is really noticeable. One kilometer later we turn right and drive 3.5 km on a side road to Weng im Gesäuse. From the bridge over the Enns you‘ll have especially in the afternoon a wonderful view back to the Gesaeuse entrance. On the bike path along the highway „Buchauer Sattel“ we reach in Admont. In the middle of the Ennstaler Alps, Admont is framed by the mountains - Haller Mauern, Buchstein and the Admonter Reichenstein. The first mention is proved from the year 859 and so Admont is one of the oldest settlements in Styria. 1074 was founded the monastery in Admont. Of particular interest are in Admont the library, the abbey pond, St. Mary's Park and the main street with some beautiful old buildings.

Until the next attraction to the sanctuary in Frauenberg we cycle on a little road 8 km south of the river Enns. The sanctuary is located at the hill „Kalvarienberg“ approximately 130m above the Enns Valley. Of the widely prominent parish and pilgrimage church you‘ll have an incomparable view of the region between the Gesaeuse and the famous mountain Grimming. The beautifully landscaped garden on the west side is a special place of spiritual retreat where you can find very well your inner peace (not shown in the Google map and elevation profile). The next 14km to Liezen we cycle on a bike path through Ardning and past Selzthal often near the River Enns. Thus, we can observe very good the beautiful scenery in the Enns Valley. Because of the many shops in Liezen we use the break for a very good shopping. From the main square in Liezen we drive first 600m towards Lassing and then we turn right onto the Enns cycle path. After 4 kilomters we cross the Enns and then begins a very nice gravel road. This is about 5 km long and offers apart from a couple of tractors a lot of rest, relaxation and a wonderful landscape. After Wörschach we follow the river Enns upstream again on a small asphalt road. In Trautenfels begins also the Salzkammergut cycle path. Who will visit the Ennsvalley in May / June can see around Trautenfels the rare Siberian irises. The bike tour continues undulating through the very beautiful places Niederöblarn and Öblarn to Stein an der Enns. One kilometer from the center in Stein an der Enns, we turn to the right, crossing the river Enns and after the 2.5 km long dirt road, we bike through Tunzendorf. Especially nice is the 2-km long gravel road between Pruggern and Aich. At the lake in Aich, we insert a long pause and refresh ourselves. Before Weissenbach and up to Haus im Ennstal there are two climbs with about 40 vertical meters. The last 7 km to the Ski World Cup town Schladming are again very simple.

After the visit of the worth seeing main square in Schladming we start the bike tour and drive about 2 km in a westerly direction. Then starts a very nice bike path next to the Enns. Until Mandling the Enns cycle path is with the exception of two short gravel roads (about 1000m and 700m) paved and well marked. Of Mandling we are now in the province of Salzburg and go on an 8-kilometer-long gravel road up to Radstadt. Highly recommended is a visit to the old town in Radstadt. You just have to take a detour of two kilometers. Even the 14 kilometers to Flachau are with an average gradient of less than 1% still very easy. Only a short piece of the cycle path in Altenmarkt is not paved. You’ll always drive there on small roads with little traffic through the meadows in the Enns valley. Unlike in the opposite direction, we remain on the Enns cycle path and drive around the center of Altenmarkt. On some nice local roads we reach the well-known winter sports resort Flachau. Up to Flachauwinkel we drive a very long time on the nice bike path. Only the last 5 kilometers the tour leads on the road with not much traffic. Unfortunately, the hut – Gasthofalm at the end of the Enns cycle path is managed. Because the highway bridge was built directly over the pasture. And so we cycle back a few kilometers to Flachu and stop at one of the many good inns.
