The market town Großpetersdorf is situated in the district Oberwart - Burgenland - Austria. The approximately 3,500 inhabitants live to 31.4 km ² in the locations Großpetersdorf, Klein Petersdorf, Welgersdorf, Miedlingsdorf and Kleinzicken. Like the rest of Burgenland Großpetersdorf belonged to Hungary until 1920/21. After World War Großpetersdorf was awarded together with the other municipalities in Burgenland in the peace treaties of Austria. Since 2000 Großpetersdorf is a market town.
The first written mention of Großpetersdorf was in the year 1273 by the Hungarian King Ladislaus. The area was settled according to the findings in pre-Christian times.
