Maribor (in German: Marburg), is with approximately 115.000 inhabitants the second largest city in Slovenia. The city has an area of 147.5 square kilometers and the river Drava flowa by Maribor.
Maribor was first mentioned in 1254 as a city. Up to 1918 Maribor was mainly populated by German and Austrian citizens and an importand town in the Duchy of Styria. The University of Maribor was built in 1975.  Since after World War 1 Marburg was given in the Treaty of Saint-Germain to Slovenia - Kingdom of Yugoslavia.

Only about 10 minutes away on the outskirts of Maribor is the ski resort of Pohorje Maribor, hosting the FIS World Cup women's slalom and giant slalom races. Well known sport events in Maribor are the ski races, MTB World Cup and the FinsSwimWorldCup (fins shimmer World Cup). The main cultural events include the No Border Jam (Punk Festival) in August, Musicseptember and the two-week music festival Lent.
