The italian pass Stelvio is with 2.757m, the highest paved mountain pass in Italy and the after the Col de I'Iséran in France the second highest in the Alps. In Bormio starts the road up on the Stelvio Pass to Prad in the region Vinschgau. This joins the Stelvio, the two Italian regions South Tyrol and Lombardy. The area around the Stelvio was in 1935 declared to a national park. In general the pass road over the Stelvio is opened for traffic from late May to late October. The 50-kilometer road between Bormio and Prad were built between 1820 - 1826 and is due to the 48 hairpin bends on the northeast ramp of Prad especially by cyclists and motorcyclists very popular. Once a year thousands of cyclists come to Italy to the car-free cycling day to ride up to the Stelvio.

Namely from Prad over the Stelvio, the Umbrail and again through the Munstervalley back to Prad. The ascent to the Stelvio from Prad has 1840 altimeters and a length of 24.5 km. A bit lighter is the increase of Bormio with 21.5 miles and 1538 altimeters.

A bike ride on the Stelvio Pass is a must for every ambitious cyclist. This tour is also called the - Queen of the Alpine passes. Until World War I, the Stelvio was even the border between Italy and Austria.
