The capital of Italy is with about 2.7 million inhabitants also the largest city in Italy. Rome is located on the Tiber River in the Lazio region and has an area of 1.285 square kilometers. As the former capital of the Roman Empire the lovely town is also referred as the "Eternal City". Rome has a Mediterranean climate with dry summers and wet winters. The independent state of Vatican City is an enclave within the city limits of Rome. The Pope as head of the Roman Catholic Church and the bishop of Rome is situated in Vatican City.

Because of the large number of important buildings and attractions, more than 10 million tourists per year visit Rome. Culturally, Rome has a lot to offer. There are actually interesting exhibitions or interesting events. In the evening the main activities take place in streets and squares or enjoy a leisurely dinner. The Vatican City, the historic center of Rome and St. Peter's Basilica was declared by UNESCO in 1980 as a World Heritage Site. The home games of the two major international football clubs Lazio and AS Roma will be played in the 85,000-seater Olympic Stadium. In Rome, the Summer Olympic Games were held in 1960.

Since the Second World War, Rome is one of the major economic centers in Italy. In addition to the main Italian airport Leonardo Da Vinci, there are two other airports in Rome. In education Rome is one of the major cities in Europe.
