Spitz is a village in lower Austria's region Wachau – in the district of Krems Land. The approximately 1,700 inhabitants live on 23.83 km² on the river Danube. The community Spitz consists of the cadastral communities Spitz, Vießling, Gut am Steg and Schwallenbach.
The wine has a long tradition in the Wachau. So already the Celts and Romans were aware of the favorable weather from the Pannonian region and the fertile soils. Even today excellent wines where produced by some growers. Primarily, the varieties Grüner Veltliner, Riesling, Müller-Thurgau, Neuburger, Chardonnay, Pinot Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Muscat, St. Laurent and Zweigelt. Several wineries offer tastings, cellar tours and wine garden tours. During the wine harvest in autumn, visitors can experience live.
Late March or early April, bloom in the Wachau thousands of apricot trees. Especially there are many near the danube upriver from Spitz. End of July, the great festival of the town in honor of the famous Wachau fruit instead: the apricot festival. A whole weekend will be shown to the guests, what great dishes can be made from apricot. e.g. Jam, champagne, liquor, cake and of course the delicious apricot dumplings.
In June, there are unique Wachau solstice celebration, which was also pointed and its surroundings are transformed into a spectacular fire, torch, light and pyrotechnic stage. In early October, during the harvest, we celebrate the harvest in Spitz: Wine, folk dance groups, musical groups and women in the Wachau costume with hand-embroidered gold domes.
