The Gastein Valley is located in the region Pongau - State Salzburg  -  Austria. The 40 km long valley stretches from north to south from the border with the austrian State Carinthia. The largest river is the Gasteiner Arche. The Gastein valley consists of three towns: Bad Gastein, Bad Hofgastein and Dorfgastein. First major settlements were founded by Bavarian and Slavic settlers in the 9th Century. The first written mention of the Gastein valley is from the 10th Century.

Very well known, is the district of Bad Gastein Böckstein because the Gastein valley from the south of Mölltal (province of Carinthia) only via the car lock through the Tauern tunnel is reachable. In Böckstein and Mallnitz the cars are loaded onto the train.

The ski area in Dorfgastein is connected with the ski area in the Großarltal. The merger of the two valleys is at 2.027m. Between Dorfgastein and Bad Hofgastein is a shuttle bus for connection to the ski resort Schlossalm - Angertal - Stubnerkogel in Bad Hofgastein. Bad Gastein and Bad Hofgastein have a common ski resort - the skiing Schlossalm - Angertal - Stubnerkogel. The skiing in the Gastein Valley is part of the Ski Amade ski slopes and offers 81 km, 5 gondolas, 8 chairlifts and 7 drag lifts.
