 The beautiful lake Achensee is with about 7 km² the largest in Tyrol. The lake is located between the Brandenberg Alps north of Jenbach - District Schwaz. Due to its altitude of about 929m, the Achensee has in the summer rarely more than 20 degrees. Its pure water and the associated high visibility of about 10m offer divers excellent conditions to explore the max. 133m deep Achensee. Because of its size and good wind conditions, the Achensee is also popular lake for sailors and surfers. The locations are in the south Pertisau am Achensee, Buchau, Maurach and Achenkirch in the north.

Since 1927 there is in Jenbach a hydroelectric power plant.  The water of the Achensee flows since then no longer to the North, but to the Jenbach in the south. Since the end of the 19th century run passenger ships on the Achensee for tourism. The Achensee is located in a nature park and therefore no other motor boats are allowed. Since 1970, the sailing will take place on Lake Achensee a good popularity and because of the strong wind through the Achenvalley some sailing competitions are held there.The road on the east bank of Achenkirch to Maurach was completed after 1955. On the west bank due to the steep mountains of the Karwendel mountain there is only a walking trail along the lake Achensee.

Pertisau and Maurach - Community Eben am Achensee - form the tourist center in the south of the Achensee. In the days of the Habsburg monarchy some emperor had already hunt in the forests around the Achensee. From Pertisau to the east are 3 short, gently sloping valleys (Gerntal with Pletzachalm, Tristenautal and Falzthurntal with Falzthurnalm and Gramaialm) into the Karwendel Mountains on completion at the end, each with towering mountains with a height of about two thousand meters. Especially hikers and mountain bikers like to visit the beautiful valleys. In the Karwendel mountain is also produced by the degradation of oil shale obtained Tyrolean rock oil that has a healing effects on muscle tension and rheumatic diseases.

Since 1934, there is in Pertisau the oldest Golf Club in Tyrol. The cable car to the head of the mountain Zwölferkopf (1,480 m) is also open in winter for skiing. In summer, many paragliders use the cable car to Zwölferkopf for a flight through the beautiful Tyrolean mountains. Achenkirch in the north of the lake Achensee has about 2.100 inhabitants and the 114 km² large municipality is bordered in the north to Germany.
In the Museum of the Sixenhof you can sees in 19 rooms the past lifestyle of the farmers, shoemakers, blacksmiths, weavers, hunters, fishermen, timber workers and firefighters at the Achensee in Tyrol. In the typical tyrolean building you can also see very many old tools. Recommend is a walk to the chapel Annakircherl, who was built on a hill opposite the parish church in 1670. The chapel has a beautiful altar and the 12 apostles were carved in a rustic style. In Achenkirch is located, with over 20 horses, the largest private Lippizaner Stud in Austria.
