In the district capital Schärding live about 5,000 residents in an area of 4.08 square km. Schärding is on the western edge of the region Innviertel at the river Inn, about 15 km south of Passau on the border with Germany. About the two bridges over the inn you get from Schärding in the neighbouring community of Neuhaus am Inn in Bavaria. The five districts of the Baroque town Schärding: Allerheiligen, Brunnwies, Kreuzberg, Schärding Inner City, Schärding suburb.

In the Middle Ages Schärding was encouraged by the situation at the Inn an important trading town. At the end of the 18th Century fell Schärding by the end of the salt trade on the Inn and the construction of the railway in an economic stagnation.

Of particular interest is in Schärding the Upper town square because of the colorful, baroque houses, partly preserved city walls and the medieval city gate. The town Wernstein lies between Schärding and Passau also on the border with Bavaria. In the 16.4 square kilometer large community live around 1,500 residents.

The Marie Bridge is a 145m long suspension bridge for pedestrians and cyclists with a 2.7m wide roadway. The winning Austrian construction price bridge connects Wernstein with Neuburg am Inn at the Bavarian side. Especially at night the bridge is worth seeing, as it lights up in different colours.

The internal screw-Vornbach Wernstein with hiking and biking trails on both sides of the Inn very well developed and so provides a wonderful insight into the floristically well worth seeing in the landscape erosion valley through which the Inn flows.

The Inn is a 517 km long tributary of the river Danube and arises from the Maloja Pass in Switzerland. Under the Swiss region Engadin, the river Inn flows through the Austrian state of Tyrol. In the middle of the River Inn is located between Kufstein and Erl, and Braunau and Passau, the border between Austria and Germany. In Passau the Inn then opens with a mean river discharge of 740 m³ / s in the Danube.

In the Austrian state of Tyrol the Inn Valley is divided to Innsbruck in the Upper Inn Valley and from Innsbruck in the Lower Inn Valley. This is through the Inn valley glaciers during the Ice Age formed in the upper valley is narrower and the sediments at the bottom wider.
